An Unexpected Side Effect

I was the silhouette for these graphics.
I am not a girly girl. I know, it's a shocking revelation. I prefer being involved in athletic pursuits and I don't mind getting dirty. I detest shopping (unless it is for shoes) and I hate tights. I don't mind wearing dresses but I would much rather wear jeans and my skull shoes. I wear makeup and do my hair but only because I am an adult and if I can get away with NOT doing them, then I don't bother. This is just how I am. I do, however, use purses. I don't really like them but I rarely have enough pockets to carry a cell phone, keys, and a wallet, so I use a purse. My old purse has been bothering me for awhile because it keeps slipping off my shoulder and driving me crazy. My laptop bag does this as well. It never used to happen, you know, before this whole CrossFit thing. I just realized why it is happening now. My traps. They are not huge per say, but they make my purse fall off my shoulder and it was driving me MAD. So, I went shopping yesterday for a new one. Don't worry. I got it at Target and it took me approximately 5 minutes to find and evaluate. That is just how I roll. I love it, as much as one can love a purse.

That's right, ladies. Do CrossFit, go purse shopping. Win win.

The last few days at the gym have been spectacular. I have been going for regular chiropractic treatments and besides the minor modifications of no box jumps or high impact lifting, I can pretty much do what I want.

Deadlift/Bench Press

I did 2 reps at 205 today for Deadlifts. This is fantastic, seeing as I haven't been able to keep up my lifting since the pain started. I did have to drop the weight drastically for the working sets, but knowing that I can still lift 205 makes me happy. I did all 3 working sets of Bench at 115#. Next time it will be 117.5. Mwhahahaha!

Back Squats/Shoulder Press

Pull Ups

I made it up to 155 for my Back Squats this week with no pain. That is exciting. I also managed to use Lil' Red for the ME Pull Ups with out kipping. I did the last 2 of my 3 worksets of Shoulder Press at 78.5. Thank goodness for 1.25# weights.

Diagnosis: Big Ol' Booty

I went back to the chiropractor today to see what is going on but unfortunately for me, the x-rays didn't download to the CD the hospital gave me so I have to go shake someone down over that. Dr. Davis DID say that most women are bottom heavy and that I am one of those women. He actually said I was overly bottom heavy, using the term "steatopygia" which basically translates to a big ol' booty. After I told him he didn't need to sugar-coat things since I have been trying to squeeze this badonakadonk into jeans for almost 29 years he came out and told me I was built like a black woman. All I could think of was "I like big butts and I cannot lie!" I started giggling uncontrollably. I am so professional. Anyway, Sir Mix A Lot said that women with my "condition" tend to hurt their backs in extension, which means that if they bend back it is more likely to hurt. I have exactly the opposite of this problem. He wasn't phased by this and said that I need to work on my ab strength and the best way to do that is....wait for it.... PLANK!!!!!! Oh, you lucky gym dogs you....

My hero.
So today we kicked of the Zone/Paleo Throwdown at the gym. I'm Team Paleo myself, which will cause me only to make a few tweaks since I eat mostly Paleo anyway. What I do eat is cheese, but not a lot and not often, so cutting that out won't be a problem. I am not going to lie, I do use cream in my morning coffee, of which I will restrict myself to one cup a day. Also, I am going to visit some friends and I am going home for my sister's baby shower in the next 2 weeks and I WILL be cheating. Who thought after the Super Bowl would be a great time to start? Not one celebration in January and I didn't have to try to do anything. Thanks, kids.

We kicked off the Throwdown with Fight Gone Bad. We'll finish it with FGB as well to see how much we've improved.

Fight Gone Bad

3 Rounds
Ball Slams
SDLHP (75/45)
Box Jumps
Push Press (75/45)
Row (calories)

We did Ball Slams instead of Wall Balls because we don't quite have the room to do Wall Balls yet. I started with a 20# ball but had to switch to 15# quickly because my back started yelling at me immediately. I used 45# for SDLHP and did step ups on the 20 inch box. I used 45# for Push Press and rowed between 6 and 7 calories per round. This isn't bad considering we have to go to the top level to get to a rower which wastes about 30 seconds. My overall score was 246. It is not as good as my previous core but SDLHP were killing me. The most important thing to remember, I have found, is that you need to have a wide stance in Sumo Deadlift High Pull. They are called SUMO Deadlifts for a reason. Also, people tend to forget he shoulder shrug at the end, especially when they get tired. You can do them wrong and get by OR you can do them right and get better. Choose to do them right. Tramp Stamp

I took a few days off from the gym this week because I had some other things going on that I needed to attend to rather than working out. It was kind of nice because I got to rest my back a little. Resting it is really sort of irrelevant because it hurts when I dry my hair or put my shoes on, so there you go. DTM bought me a really sexy (read: old lady-ish) heating pad that is made of blue elastic. I can wear it like a belt. SO hot. (HA! See what I did there?) I think he got it for me so I would stop saying I have a tramp stamp:

It's ok to be jealous of my power obliques.
Yeah, that is a Thermacare Heating Pad for your neck and shoulders. It did in a pinch. It also created endless fun for me, because the term "tramp stamp" makes DTM slightly uncomfortable. I am such a good wife.

Anyway, darling DTM bought me not only an electric one but also Thermacare Heating Pads for back and hips. They still feel like a diaper but at least they fit a little better. I did get my x-rays on Saturday and I go back to the chiropractor on Monday so he can check them out and we can fix this baloney. I am looking forward to it! Maybe we'll do Overhead Squats in celebration!

OHS make me smile!
